I got started in real estate in the late summer of 2006, hung my license with RE/MAX River & Sea and didn’t look back. A lot has changed in the real estate industry in just 4 short years: mortgage crisis, financial meltdown and numerous “foreclosure gates”. A lot of unknowns. Nobody has a crystal ball.
While the real estate business hasn’t been easy, most of it is pretty simple. Take care of your clients. Follow-up. Return phone calls. (gasp) Maybe even answer the phone. The positive part of getting into the real estate business just as it was collapsing is that I didn’t learn or develop bad real estate agent habits. Prior to 2006 just about anyone with a pulse could make a good living helping people buy or sell real estate. There wasn’t any marketing required for the most part, maybe the hardest part of the job was the real estate agent convincing the seller to accept the full price offer. Oh, and making sure you didn’t run out of deposit slips.
I have a different background than most. While I do have sales experience that predates my real estate career, there’s one important thing I was taught when I was in grade school: The customer is always right. Always. (Thanks Pops)
It’s a mantra I’ve always tried my best to follow, and it’s so simple I don’t even need to write it down. I try my best to listen, offer my opinion when asked and let the client make the decision. I don’t have to live there, but they do. It certainly won’t benefit the client to push them into a property that doesn’t work.
Technology is rapidly evolving, faster than most Realtors can keep up. I pride myself on being one step ahead of the next guy, keeping up on tools that save time or make the process easier. One tool I’ve implemented in my business is Docusign, an electronic signature application. It’s secure, easy and fast. I’ve received signatures from multiple parties in different states on the document in literally minutes. I’ve even been able to get documents signed by a client on a ship at sea. Even local clients like the service, they do not need to break away from home or work to sign a document.
I’ve received a production award from RE/MAX International every year I’ve been licensed. I don’t like to brag, so that’s enough of that.
If you have questions about the market or need help, get in touch. I look forward to it.
